“Temps de Poisson• Boundless Gratitude” — Hsu Hsiu-Chu’s Artistic Creation

一、移動者的體悟

    徐秀菊從1991年起於美國、台灣及澳門等不同的地區間持續移動,2011年更從東台灣的東華大學移動到澳門,讓自己成為一位名符其實在不同文化間移動的體驗者。近十年來更在台灣與澳門兩個不同文化地區間游離,強烈感受到不同的社會、文化與環境會影響到藝術主體性的發展及自我的認同。本次展覽是創作者嘗試以「主體性」、「自我」與「文化」作為圖像創作的核心理念,冀望透過理性與感性的交織來闡述在澳門工作十年的生命體悟。展覽主題為魚躍-感恩,除傳遞出主體性、自我與文化的意涵外,同時也透過敘事性的圖像語言將「主體性」、「自我」與圖像在「文化」間隙(Gaps)之間作一個巧妙的融和,以凸顯出圖像關係的相對性而非絕對性,讓傳遞出來的意境兼具形式與內容。這種傳遞出的藝術形式關係是彼此影響但又彼此互相對立的,而在產生出的特有圖像符碼效應下,是可能呈現出互補、並述或是彼此相左的關係。另外,有關意象的呈現則與觀者對圖像符碼的體悟有關,它可能呈現出與創作者所欲表達的意向相符、相左甚至超越,或者不及於創作者所意圖傳遞的意象,因此可以激發出更多的創意思維。

二、意識能量轉化的藝術創作

藝術創作是一種生命和表象間的意識形態交會,在建構藝術主體性的同時也流露出自我和文化的交融。創作者相信這種意象的思維可透過感知將線條和色彩形象化後再轉化為視覺刺激物,因此創作者對藝術創作的期待不是事物的再現,而是一種意識能量的轉化,並流露出生存的堅強韌性,透過創作來回應生命的成長並將蛻變所產生的巨大能量,形塑出對人文的關懷。

創作者童年即開始探索生命的意義並不斷地尋找;在歷經台灣、美國與澳門等地的工作和學習中,環境一直在改變,移動的我也在成長和改變。無論是選擇或被選擇,這其中有命運也有機運,然而不同的文化與經歷更是成了創作者生命的養分。我是誰,誰是我? 對生命來源的探索以及生活中的悲歡離合、酸甜苦辣,都是創作者靈感的來源,而創作者也深入去探討自我生命的特質與藝術創作間的連結。創作者用藝術創作刻劃自己的人生歲月與感悟,而作品中的「玫瑰人生」創作系列代表的是一種生命的本質,「龍馬精神」創作系列代表的是一種生命的精神,「魚躍」系列代表的是一種生命的態度,「3537」創作系列則是代表生命的無常。

  • The experience of a mover

Hsu Hsiu-Chu has been moving between different regions, such as the United States, Taiwan, and Macao since 1991. In 2011, she moved from Dong Hwa University of Eastern Taiwan to Macao, making herself a true mover between different cultures and regions.  In the movements between Taiwan and Macao of the last ten years, she has strongly felt that different societies, cultures and environments could affect the development of artistic entities and self-identification. This exhibition is an attempt by her to use “identity”, “self” and “culture” as the core concepts of image creation, with the expectation to explicate her life experience of working in Macao during the last ten years through interweaving rationality with sensibility.

The theme of the exhibition is Temps de Poisson• Boundless Gratitude”. In addition to conveying the meanings of identity, self and culture, it uses the narrative image language to put “identity”, “self” and image in the “gaps” of cultures to make an ingenious harmony to highlight the relativity rather than absoluteness of the relations between images, so that the conveyed artistic conception is presented in both form and content. The relations between these art forms thus conveyed are not only mutually influencing but also mutually opposed. The resultant unique image code effects can then be complementary, parallel or contradictory. Furthermore, the presentation of the relevant image is related to the viewer’s perception of the image code, which may appear to be consistent with, contradictory, beyond, or below the intention attempted by the creator, hence inspiring more creative thinking.

  • The artistic creation of energy transformation in consciousness

Artistic creation represents an ideological intersection between life and appearance. While constructing the subjectivity of art, it also reveals the integration of self and culture. The creator believes that this kind of imagery thinking can bring the visualization of lines and colors through perception and then transform these elements into visual stimuli. Therefore, the creator’s expectation for artistic creation is not the reproduction of things, but a transformation of consciousness energy and the revelation of tenacity for survival. With firm tenacity for survival and responding to the tremendous energy generated by her life transformation through creation, the creator attempts to shape her humanistic concerns.

The creator began to explore the meaning of life in her childhood, and has been searching ever since. Through working and studying in Taiwan, the United States and Macao, with the ever-changing environments, the creator has also been growing and changing as a moving person. To choose or to be chosen, it has been the work of either destiny or opportunity.  Different cultures and experiences have become the nutrients of the creator’s life. “Who am I and I am who?” The explorations of  sources of life,  joys and sorrows,  ups and downs, all these are the sources of inspiration for the creator, who looks deeply into the connection between the characteristics of self-life and artistic creation. Using artistic creation, the creator describes her own life and her enlightenment.  “The Life of Roses” series represents the essence of life, “The Vigorous Spirit Series” represents the spirit of life,  “Temps de Poisson” series  represents an attitude towards life, while the “3537 Series” represents the impermanence of life.
